The Connecticut state government should increase excise taxes on alcohol to reduce the harmful use of alcohol, generate more revenues to offset the economic costs of harmful alcohol use and reduce alcohol-related deaths.

The authors of this article argue that although increasing taxes on drugs such as alcohol has been traditionally used to generate revenue, modern governments are using increased taxation as a measure to curb the harmful effects of alcohol (Chaloupka et al., 2019). Drawing from a series of studies, the authors conclude that there exists an inverse relationship between alcohol consumption and an increase in the excise duty of alcoholic beverages (Chaloupka et al., 2019). Consequently, imposing higher excise taxes on alcoholic drinks leads to a reduction in the harmful use of alcohol. The credibility of the source is without question for two main reasons. First, the source was obtained from Google Scholar, which is a reputable search engine for books and journal articles.
