Article Summary
This paper has purposed to provide a summary of a research article on hypertension. The said article has been written by Sumeet et. al. and has been published in the Journal of Rural and Tropical Public Health in the year 2011 (Gupta et. al, 2011). This article is titled "Prevalence and Predictors of Essential Hypertension in the Rural Population of Haryana, India: an Hospital Based Study.”
The research shows that the men are more susceptible to hypertension in comparison to women. The researchers point out that lifestyle choices play a large part in the susceptibility of men to hypertension. This is with reference to increase in body mass index and addiction to smoking. Family history as also been cited as paying a significant role in the susceptibility to hypertension. The researchers have pointed out that a developed nation with an ageing population is more susceptible to hypertension that a developing nation characterized with a young population. Early detection has been shown to be fundamental in the mitigation of the hypertension.
Critique
The authors give a clear statement of aims. Despite the fact that qualitative approach is the best, the authors do not expound on the rationales motivating their use of a qualitative approach. Additionally, the researchers do not give clear mention of the exact research design that has been employed. The analysis has been carried out rather quick. This is in reference to the small space that has been allocated to this endeavor. As per the nature of the research objectives, it is evident that the data collection process that was adopted was appropriate in meeting the goals of the study. Given that the study was focused on hospitals, the recruitments strategy was also appropriate. The researchers have adhered to the ethical standards given that they sought the necessary approval from the ethics committee.
