CONTEXT

The 9th-grade class I am designing this math lesson for consists of students from diverse socio-economic backgrounds, including those with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), and English Language Learners (ELLs). The school district and cooperating teacher emphasize the importance of differentiated instruction and promoting equitable learning opportunities for all students.

LESSON SUMMARY

The lesson aims to help grade 9 students understand the process of solving radical equations. By incorporating both online and face-to-face components, this blended lesson will provide opportunities for virtual collaboration and in-person discussions. The lesson will guide students through the steps involved in solving radical equations and will encourage them to apply their knowledge to real-world scenarios.

How is Theory applied in this lesson?

In this lesson, the educational theory of Constructivism will be applied. Constructivism posits that students construct their knowledge and understanding through active engagement with meaningful tasks, social interactions, and reflection on their experiences (Hmelo-Silver, 2004). By incorporating hands-on activities and real-world examples, students will have the opportunity to actively explore solving radical equations, make connections between theory and practice, and construct their understanding of the topic.
The choice of Constructivism for this lesson is rooted in its emphasis on student-centered learning, where students are actively involved in constructing their knowledge rather than passively receiving information. By engaging in activities that promote exploration, discovery, and reflection, students will develop a deeper understanding of solving radical equations.

ISTE Standards for Students How will you address the ISTE Standards for Students?

In this lesson, the following ISTE Standards for Students will be addressed:
1 Standard: Computational Thinker (ISTE Standard 5)
Students will analyze and solve problems using computational thinking strategies, such as identifying patterns, developing algorithms, and using logical reasoning, to understand and manipulate solving radical equations.
Online Component: Students will engage in virtual activities that require them to identify patterns in radical equations and develop algorithms for solving them.
Face-to-Face Component: Students will collaborate in small groups during breakout sessions to apply computational thinking strategies and solve radical equations together.
2 Standard: Creative Communicator (ISTE Standard 6)
Students will effectively communicate their mathematical thinking and findings by creating visual representations, graphs, and written explanations to interpret and analyze solving radical equations.
Online Component: Students will use online tools or math software to create visual representations of radical equations and their solutions. They will also practice writing clear explanations for their problem-solving process.
Face-to-Face Component: Students will present their visual representations and written explanations to their peers in small group discussions. They will receive feedback and engage in constructive discussions to enhance their communication skills.

STATE or COMMON CORE How will you address your States or the Common Core standards?

This lesson aligns with the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for Mathematics. The following standards will be covered:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSA.REI.D.11
Solve simple rational and radical equations in one variable, and give examples showing how extraneous solutions may arise.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSA.REI.D.12
Graph the solutions to a linear inequality in two variables as a half-plane (excluding the boundary in the case of a strict inequality), and graph the solution set to a system of linear inequalities in two variables as the intersection of the corresponding half-planes.

MEASURABLE OBJECTIVE What will your students be able to do?

The students will be able to solve radical equations by applying appropriate techniques, such as factoring, isolating the radical term, and squaring both sides. They will demonstrate this understanding by interpreting and analyzing the solutions of radical equations through collaboration and assessments. Understanding will be demonstrated by accurately solving 15 radical equations with 80% accuracy using a combination of algebraic techniques. Students will also be able to explain the significance of extraneous solutions in the context of radical equations.

ASSESSMENT
How will you know whether your students have made progress toward the objective?
How and when will you assess mastery?

FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT:
During the lesson, formative assessments will be utilized to gauge students' understanding and provide immediate feedback. I will incorporate activities such as think-pair-share discussions and virtual exit tickets to assess students' comprehension of solving radical equations.

DIVERSE LEARNERS (Mixed Abilities)
1. How will your instruction support the diversity of learners in your classroom?
2. List the specific strategies you will use.
